Do we ever find ourselves up against others who are arrogant, self-righteous, manipulative, controlling, accusing, blaming of others?
Jesus did in His day.
And, to top it off, they acted religious, and as though they were so good. And yet, Jesus could see RIGHT THROUGH THEM to the grave corruption and depravity within.
Where in most of Jesus' interactions with others, we see Him kind, gentle, loving, merciful; but here, He confronts the deceptive ploy head on:
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.
So you too, outwardly appear righteous to people, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness" (Mat 23:27-28)
If Jesus experienced this, we as his followers may experience this as well. And He shows us how to respond, by calling a spade a spade, even if it disguises itself as an ace of hearts. This doesn't mean we always confront externally, because it may not be prudent; but at least with God, within ourselves, and with others supporting us.
Jesus did not enable the Pharisees in their grave dysfunction. Neither are we called to. Our way of confronting such a situation may not be as dramatic or strong as Jesus was. Each situation is different, and we must call upon the Holy Spirit for guidance.
It is a time for tough love and truth.
But we must be prepared; because often when such spirits are confronted, and stood up against rather than enabled, the attack becomes still more fierce.
Jesus was crucified, we may be also. But, we are called to persevere in Truth, and in God's time and way, resurrection graces will follow.
